Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need to start yoga?

All you need to bring are comfortable clothes and a good attitude! We do a variety of movements in yoga, so your clothes should be able to move with you. Sometimes it can get sweaty so dress accordingly! Yoga mats, blocks, belts and blankets are all tools to support your practice, but not they are not necessary to do yoga.

What if I have never done yoga before?

No problem! Yoga is for everybody and can be modified for every BODY! The most important thing is to listen to your body first and foremost, do what you can and take a break when you need to. The goal of yoga is to prepare the body and mind for relaxation and meditation, so if all you do is breathe, stretch and relax, you have done yoga!

What if I have an injury or physical condition?

First, check with your physician and make sure it is ok. It is also important to communicate with your yoga teacher if you have any concerns and to be guided to the right modifications and props.

Can I eat before yoga?

It is best to wait an hour after eating before practicing yoga, but a small snack before your class is perfectly alright. Observe your body to learn how much time you need to digest your food before practice.

Can I learn yoga online?

Initially, having a good teacher will help you avoid mistakes and keep you safe. However, practicing yoga online is also a great way to practice at your own pace and be part of a community.

Do I have to be flexible to practice yoga?

No!! If you are not flexible, yoga is a great way to become more flexible.

How many times a week should I practice?

Again, it’s your body, your practice. It all depends on how you feel emotionally and physically. Ideally 2-3 classes a week if you want to grow your practice, but it’s good to practice every day, even if it’s just for 5 minutes in the morning when you first roll out of bed. Remember – you can practice yoga anywhere!

Is there an age limit to practicing yoga?

Not at all! Students start in their 60’s and maintain a practice in their 70’s and 80’s! You may even see an 18 year old and a 70 year old in the same class! As long as you are listening to your body and respecting it, there is no limit to your yoga practice!

What should I expect when I go to a yoga class?

Students generally arrive early to get settled in a spot and set up any props they might need close by. It is a good idea to introduce yourself to the teacher and tell them if you are new and if you have any injuries or concerns. Many yoga spaces require you to remove your shoes to keep the floor clean, and, for safety reasons, teachers prefer you practice barefoot, but again do what is best for you and your body. Before the class begins, the teacher will usually ask everyone to turn their phones off. After a sequence of yoga poses, there is a relaxation period at the end of the class.

Will yoga conflict with my religion?

Yoga does not conflict with religion. Yoga is a mind/body practice focused on building physical and mental strength. Yoga typically combines physical postures, breathing exercises, meditation and relaxation - known as hatha yoga. There are four paths of yoga: raja (control of the mind), gyan (knowledge), karma (action) and bhakti (devotion) - all of which lead to “enlightenment” or “self-realization.”

Do I have to meditate to do yoga?

Some yoga classes include a meditative practice, and some do not. You can ask the yoga teacher before attending a class if meditation is included in the class. The relaxation period at the end of a yoga class can bring you into a meditative state, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and allowing your body to rest and repair.
